AI is the recent hype and to many, the next phase in the evolution of technology. With the plethora of AI tools available online, the most commonly known of all of them is ChatGPT.
Released as a free AI tool online by OpenAI, the browser version of ChatGPT, using the GPT-3.5 model snapshot information up until September 2021. Although not up to date, yet the advantages offered by it is vast.
As a technology company, ChatGPT has definitely pique our interest. Here are few ways how ChatGPT has benefit us in FILPAL so far.
As a knowledge archive
Our work in both the hardware and software department, in existing projects or exploration of new projects has benefited greatly from using AI tools. ChatGPT is capable to assist in providing an outline on a subject matter. This is even more useful as a lot of our endeavors involves R&D. ChatGPT would be able to suggest methods, ideas, and past technologies that we may not know of.
However, care is placed in not taking everything that is said as definitive, but used correctly, it is able to save up months of research work and help point us in the right direction to explore in. Information has never been closer to our fingertips in this fast paced world.
As a debugging assistant
Recently, there was an incident where a customer encountered a bug in one of our software. It was a total mystery how that bug came to be. The log file from the customer showed no error, arranging a video call with him came nowhere close to identifying the problem. Replicating the exact steps resulted with no error on our side at all. In all previous instances, this would resulted in a bug that would take months to resolve, a complete mystery.
Using ChatGPT as an assistant, our programmers described the problem faced with the parameters involved. ChatGPT would then suggest a few areas to look at. Back and forth discussions and exploring deeper on the perspectives suggested accelerated the ability to narrow down the scope of the problem.
We ended up identifying the problem based on the suggestion of ChatGPT. In retrospect, it was an issue that was so unexpected that it would never had crossed our mind. The entire debugging process took us one afternoon. We are then able to convey the way to avoid the bug while we work on patching the software.
As a teacher
The company is growing, and so is our head counts. Many of our new hires were fresh graduates or new to the field of RF. But that’s ok for us as we are always willing to train and invest in new talents. On-job-training (OJT) in the past had always require a teacher, usually the immediate superior to guide the new hire.
Now with ChatGPT, our new hires can now be given a topic and asked to self-teach through it. Of course monitoring is still needed, but using ChatGPT gives a few advantages. Firstly, it frees up more time for the teacher to work on priority tasks. Secondly, it helps inculcate the skill to ask questions among new hires, thus to some extend, training critical thinking. This is because the nature of ChatGPT as a language model AI, users are able to easily go deep in researching on a topic should the right questions are asked. Thirdly, it speeds up the learning process of fundamental RF knowledge as well as allowing our new hires to learn in a way that they may understand better.
As an analyst
Although not the best AI model to do it, ChatGPT is still somewhat useful in conducting preliminary market research. With the right questions, it is able to provide a list of similar products to our product, discover trends and what customers maybe looking for in a product as well as provide the references for it. But again, since ChatGPT information is screenshot up towards 2021 only, the information provided should be taken with caution as it may not be most accurate.
Aside from market research, ChatGPT is also useful for help pointing at areas that needs improvement for our website. For example, ChatGPT is able to read a link and generate a suitable Structured Data Markup (SDM) for the page. A SDM is useful to assist SEO to understand the page better and thus an integral part in help boosting the visibility of our website
As a script writer
Our rapid expansion means that customer experience and relations is becoming increasingly important. And sometimes, drafting the best write-ups may take time, precious time that is needed for some other priority tasks. By using ChatGPT, we can get suggestions on how to draft a better thank you message or “lets connect” message and much more. It also comes in useful for coming out with a video script for videos that we are thinking of making. Sometimes, what we need are just suggestions on the most tactful or most courteous word to use to express ourselves!
For Fun
Is not all just work in our company. Sometimes, our conversations goes into things such as movies, songs, board games (we like board games!), politics, food and much more. One recent conversation involves finding out the difference between a pub, bistro, bar and lounge. Curious? How about try asking ChatGPT!
AI as a tool
It is important that we understand all these recent AIs as just tools, just like a spectrometer or a calculator or even a whiteboard marker. Tools are meant to help make a process easier and free up the time for more deeper and advance work. And that’s how ChatGPT is used in our company.
Besides using AI, we are also actively developing a new AI tool for speeding up optimization process of RF designs. So we are not only a consumer, but also an innovator. We look forward to greater heights with help of modern and futuristic tools to help move faster!
