The Penang Skills Development Centre (PSDC), in collaboration with FILPAL, has organized a four-day (16, 17, 23, 24 May) training program on radio frequency (RF) fundamentals and measurement basics. The program aimed to enhance the participants’ knowledge and skills in RF engineering and covered a wide range of topics, including RF and microwave systems, transmission lines, impedance matching techniques, passive and active RF components, EDS HF (Electronic Design Simulation High Frequency) software, and Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) practical lab works.

Making The Training More Relatable

Compared with our maiden run last January, we realize that there is a need in the industry for more practical work in the training. Thus, this time the training program included more hands-on sessions with our own FILPAL EDS HF software, a powerful tool for RF circuit design and simulation. Participants had the opportunity to gain practical experience using the software to analyze and optimize RF circuits. This interactive session allowed them to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, enhancing their understanding of RF circuit design principles.

On the other hand, the practical lab works focused on the utilization of Vector Network Analyzers (VNAs) for RF measurements. Participants learned to calibrate the VNA, perform S-parameter measurements, analyze scattering parameters, and characterize RF devices. These practical exercises equipped participants with the necessary skills to accurately measure and evaluate RF components and systems.

As a Training Assistant

During the RF fundamental and measurement basics training, my role as a training assistant was to ensure the smooth execution of the practical software and hardware lab works.

My responsibilities included setting up the lab equipment and software tools required for the practical sessions. This involved ensuring that all necessary hardware components, such as Vector Network Analyzers (VNAs), were properly connected and functioning. During the practical lab sessions, I provide technical guidance and assistance to the participants. This involved helping them navigate through the software interfaces and also ensure that participants understood the proper usage of the software and hardware tools, allowing them to make the most out of the practical exercises.

One of the notable aspects of my role as a training assistant was the opportunity to engage in conversations with the participants during our break time and gain insights into their roles, responsibilities, and work cultures within their respective companies. This interaction provided a valuable exchange of knowledge and experiences, enriching the overall training environment.

A Big Thank You

Not to forget, we would like to thank each and every participant. The cooperation and enthusiasm of the participants were remarkable. They actively engaged in the training sessions, eagerly participating in discussions and practical exercises.

Their willingness to learn and ask insightful questions contributed to a vibrant learning environment. The cooperative nature of the participants fostered collaboration and knowledge-sharing among peers, enhancing the overall training experience.

“It is very good program and good fresher program. The speakers were very clear and engaging.”, says Safwan, who was one of the training participants.

Partnership For Growth

Overall, the four-day RF fundamental and measurement basics training provided by PSDC and FILPAL proved highly valuable for the participants. The comprehensive curriculum, combining theoretical and practical modules, ensured a solid understanding of RF engineering principles and measurement techniques.

The collaboration between PSDC and FILPAL resulted in high-quality training and valuable networking opportunities. The participants acquired knowledge and skills that will undoubtedly contribute to their professional growth and enhance their capabilities in the field of RF engineering.

Starting from 2023, in conjunction with Penang Skill Development Center (PSDC), FILPAL will be organizing the trainings every quarter. Our next training is set at Q3: 15–16, 22–23 Aug 2023.
