Since years ago, when the company is still a fledging, it has always been one of our dream, our hope, to be able to conduct RF and Microwave related training workshop for the industries in Penang. As part of the company’s RF Turnkey Solution, we believe in the need for talent development for the electrical and electronics industry in Malaysia. We believe that with the increasing importance of RF and Microwave in our current industry, contributed by the increasing demand from technologies like 5G and Industry 4.0, the value of the Malaysia’s EE industry can only grow when new talents are raised.

RF Industry Ready Program

So, I was excited when we get to finally put this plan into motion. In collaboration with Penang Skills Development Center (PSDC), we launched our first of our quarterly RF “Industry-Ready” training program on, aimed towards the EE industry in Penang.

Named as “RF Fundamental and Measurement Basic”, it was the Level 1 entry level training of the 4 levels we designed to become acquainted with RF and Microwave field. It was our first time conducting an industry training, spanning 4 days and 32 hours, with 2 trainers and 4 participants from 2 companies with factories in Penang.

Theory, Software and Hands-on

Preparing for the training was undeniably challenging for me, but it was still an enjoyable process. It was always my passion to be able to teach and perform knowledge sharing with my peers in the industry. Naturally, the entry of the program is to introduce some of the basic theory of RF and Microwave. We discussed on things like S-parameters responses and understanding return loss and insertion loss, how to read a Smith chart and use it for impedance matching, how to ensure maximum power transfer, how to perform tuning of designs and much more.

Besides these, we take time to look into designs of antennas, couplers, filters, ladder lumped network, distributed lines and many more designs that can come in useful for the participants. And all these, we discuss and learn about it while using our own in-house built RF EDA tool. Using our EDA software, participants are given the chance to do hands-on designing of many different RF components and understand how the response and performance may vary depending on how the design parameters are changed.

And on our last day, participants are also given the chance to operate a Vector Network Analyzer (VNA). These equipment are pivotal when working in the RF industry and are used commonly when performing testing on various RF components. Testing and measurement are done often as a quality check on manufactured products to ensure the performance does not differ from the designs. And Penang has a lot of factories involved in the fabrication and manufacturing process. Which is why its understandable when participants show extra interest on how to operate these equipment. I wish we had more days even to teach how to use these equipment, it would have been useful to the participants!

Looking Forward to the Next

At the end of the day, I’m grateful we had the chance to conduct this workshop. I left the training excited and satisfied and hoping that in these few days, I manage to impart some valuable knowledge to my peers in the industry. I look forward to the next workshop that we will conduct in May!

Starting from 2023, in conjunction with Penang Skill Development Center (PSDC), FILPAL will be organizing the trainings every quarter. Our next training is set at Q2: 16–17, 23–24 May 2023.
